We have come across the following video on YouTube which is showing the fishing of a pretty large Tigershark by fishermen in Indonesia. The video is probably taken from an Italian documentation.

We have also ask the person who published the video on the website to give a short comment on it:
"This video shows the traditional fishing of a large tiger shark to take advantage of all its parts as opposed to industrial fishing and indiscriminate that practice "finning" and is causing the extinction of most species of our oceans. The images belong to an Italian film titled squali il terror dei Mari."
What do YOU think? Do we have the right to accuse local fishermen for the way they make their living from the ocean while industrial fishing is pushing oceans´ life to the edge of existence? Is there any alternative way we can support local people to make their contibution to the protection of these wonderful animals without losing their own (financial) basis?
Please feel free to leave your comment on this topic in our guestbook!

21st July, 2008 Horrific shark fishing/finning proposal in Australia

Please read the following message from which we received from Andy Cobb. We do not know, whether he is the author but due to this alarming message we decided to place it here:
"Please visit this link and learn about Queensland's proposal to set up shark fishing, including that for the international shark finning campaign, and consider sending the letter with your comments.
http://www.amcs.org.au/default2.asp?active_page_id=490
I was disgusted, appalled and deeply disturbed by this proposal. I earned my divers' certification in Queensland, and this seems like the absolute LEAST likely thing to even be proposed there. The government and Queenslanders have traditionally promoted preservation, strict diving rules, protection of species, etc. What drugs are they smoking?
Here were my additional comments:
Though I am from the United States (which surely has its own environmental offenses to correct), I earned my diving certification in Queensland. I was impressed by the governments efforts, through preservation programs and strict diving rules, to protect the ecosystems of the Barrier Reef and endangered marine life in general. This proposal not only surprises me but absolutely appalls me. Shark finning is among the most horrifying practices inflicted on wildlife populations today, and its destructive effects, along with irresponsible fishing, have reduced shark populations dramatically. I hope that Queensland, as an already recognized defender of marine preservation, will set an example for the world to follow in stopping this proposal.
Please help us, whether you are Australian or not, to join the voices in support of shark preservation and against this proposal."

If you decide to support this campaign, we would be happy to receive your short feedback in out guestbook!

Guestbook entry : "Dear Timo, congratulations on following your passion to let people know how important the sharks are and why it is so important to protect them. The Oceans regulators are highly threatened and at 200-million a year being killed, the scientists who follow this phenomena, predict that in 10-years there will not be enough shark to regulate the ocean. Without the sharks, the ocean dies."
From Andrew Cobb, the Sharkproject Ambassador to South Africa.
